[Past Activities]

DDAS members and their families at the barbecue held at the Society's Flamsteed Observatory on July 6th 1991. Standing at the rear is Keith Plamping, while Ed Spooner is kneeling. Ed would soon be leaving the Derby area as he had recently accepted a Professorship at Durham University, and was presented with a tankard by the DDAS on account of this.  Photo courtesy of Arthur Tristram.

THE BARBECUE

by Chris Campbell

July the 6th - it was OUR night, the best one of the year
"Support our Barbecue please do." "We'll all be there no fear."

The sun shone and the wind dropped, the air was sweet as balm.
The flies massed and the gnats bit, to disturb the peace and calm.

John Holmes he was our "Master Chef", his wife she lent a hand,
Splitting cobs and buttering spuds, the job she did was grand.

John must be a 'religious' cook, the food it tasted nice,
But everything just seemed to be a burnt offering or sacrifice!

"The chicken drumsticks are well done, but please be of good cheer.
It's better to be safe and sound, we'll have no Salmonella here."

"Roll up, roll up for sausages, beefburgers and the like.
There are veggie ones as well, you know. They'll be ready in a trice."

Alex stirred the onions, he did it with some flare.
"Now they are all golden brown, come have some - if you dare."

The wine did flow, our spirits too were lifted on this eve,
"Till Dave came with his little tin, "one pound there, if you please."

The company was jovial and conversation sparkled, but from
Pavarotti and John Holmes a duet we had to harken.

Before we left we gathered round whilst Jane a speech did give
To our good friend 'Professor Ed', in Durham he will live.

Good luck in your new post, Ed. Our greetings go with you.
We hope you liked the tankard, remember us please do.

The sun had set, twas time to go. We walked away with ease.
Just one last word from dear old John
"TO THE PATH KEEP IF YOU PLEASE"
