NGC 3718

Barred Spiral Galaxy in Ursa Major

[NGC Index]

John Hill captured this image of NGC 3718, a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major, on the 21st April 2026. This galaxy has been warped into an S shape with a prominent dust lane at the central core. This distortion is due to the gravitational interaction with galaxy NGC 3729, seen to the right of NGC 3718. Also visible just above NGC 3718 is Hickson Compact Group 56, a group of 4 galaxies interacting with each other. The image comprises 284 x 60 second subs (4hrs 44mins) using a Meade 125ETX (1900 mm focal length Maksutov-Cassegrain), a 294MC Pro camera (at -10°C, gain 120 with darks, flats and bias taken) and an Optolong L-Pro filter. The mount was a Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro with guiding and image capture using an ASIair Pro. The image was processed in PixInsight.  Image Credit: John Hill.
