The Sky at Night and Dr Becky Smethurst at the Flamsteed Observatory

| The Derby and District Astronomical Society was fortunate enough to play host to Dr Becky Smethurst and a production crew from the BBC's The Sky at Night at our Flamsteed Observatory on Tuesday, 21st July 2026. An astrophysicist based at the University of Oxford, Becky is well known for her YouTube channel Dr Becky, and is the author of several popular books on astronomy. During her visit to our observatory she was accompanied by Sky at Night series producer Amena Hasan and Assistant Producer Benjamin Smith. They filmed Becky delivering the star guide to be included in the August 2026 edition of The Sky at Night. Becky also filmed material for her own July 2026 Night Sky News on the Dr Becky YouTube channel, and we thank both her and the BBC team for helping to promote our facility. We are delighted that the BBC chose the Flamsteed Observatory to film for The Sky at Night and it was fascinating to watch the process of producing footage for the programme.
