The Sun in 2026

[Gallery]

This image of the sun is a mosaic of 8 images compiled from 8 video files taken on the afternoon of 29 April 2026 by Chris Callaway. The equipment used was a Coronado 90 telescope and a ZWO ASI462MM camera. Each video file had 1,000 frames taken at 64 fps, the best 99 frames of each file were used. Astrosurface was used to process the video files, the 8 images were merged in Photoshop with subsequent editing using Astra Image and Photoshop. Crops from the image have been also been included to show the details.  Images Credit: Chris Callaway.

Pete Hill took advantage of the clear skies on the 7th April 2026 to capture the following five images of the Sun. All images were captured using a DMK 41 mono camera, and in each case 1000 frames of video were stacked in Autostakkert3, and wavelets processed in Registax 6. All final processing, alignment, and colouration was done in Photoshop CS6. All used an HEQ5 pro mount tracking at solar rate. The first image is an H-Alpha view taken with a Coronado PST piggy backed on a Skywatcher 102 telescope. Next is a Calcium K image taken through a Baader CaK filter using a 0.5x focal reducer, viewing through a Herschel wedge attached to the Skywatcher 102. Following that is a visible light image taken using the same setup as the Calcium K image, but using a Baader Continuum filter instead. Finally the image of sunspots was taken using the same setup as the visible image but replacing the focal reducer with a Barlow lens.  Images Credit: Pete Hill.
